Pakistani police say an attack by pro-Taliban militants on a school in the northwestern city of Peshawar is over and all the militants are dead. The attack on an army-run school in Peshawar killed at least 130 people, leaving a dozen more injured. Officials said the combat operation is over and they are moving to clear the building. They added that the clearance of the target site will take time as the militants have planted explosive devices in the school. Special forces have rescued more than a dozen staff and students. Pakistan’s Army chief, General Raheel Sharif, reached Peshawar immediately after the incident and vowed to continue the fight against the militants. Hours later, Pakistani media reported that the army had launched 10 airstrikes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region where the militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan group are mainly based. The militants have claimed responsibility for the brutal attack. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called the assault a national tragedy.
